Explore our history
Two engineers stood on a Copenhagen rooftop in 1945, and agreed to start their own firm. The rest is history
From a rooftop, to the future
In October 1945, two young engineers, Børge Ramboll and Johan Hannemann, stood on the rooftop of the Technical University of Denmark, looking out over Copenhagen. Like others at that time, they had witnessed destruction and distress during the Second World War, and felt a strong urge to help rebuild society and shape a better future.
A perfect match
It turned out that Rambøll and Hannemann were a perfect match; Rambøll, a visionary humanist with excellent leadership skills complemented Hannemann, a highly talented engineer with a flair for technical details. They printed a stack of business cards with the inscription Ramboll & Hannemann. Consulting engineers and so it began.
Threads in our history
Our shared culture relies on us respecting our founders approach to work, society, and employees. And their legacy is alive and well.
In 2020, we celebrated a significant milestone: the first 75 years of Ramboll. In 2022, we marked half a century since Ramboll, Hannemann and three other partners in the company transferred ownership of Ramboll to a foundation, with the purpose of ensuring the perpetual existence of Ramboll to the benefit of its employees and wider society.
To celebrate 50 years of our Foundation ownership, we launched Threads in our history, a unique digital look at Ramboll s people, culture, and skills, offering insight into five chapters or threads in Ramboll s history that help weave the unique Ramboll fabric
Better conditions for people and nature
Right from the start, the company was permeated by a strong humanistic and social vision to help rebuild the societies and improve the conditions for people and nature. This fundamental purpose remains the same today, reflected in mission, vision, values, and commitments.
Decarbonisation drives great opportunities for investments and solutions to benefit nature and humans
Fossil fuels provide 83% of global primary energy demand and contribute about 73% of global carbon emissions. A huge expansion of solar and wind power is needed to displace fossil energy with renewable energy in the electricity grid. It means scaling-up deployment of green hydrogen to power heavy transport and industry.
At the same time, the whole life carbon of products and built assets needs to be radically reduced by mitigating embodied and operational carbon and focusing on circular approaches. We can reduce carbon impact of the built environment buildings, infrastructure and construction and do that while boosting liveability, so that people and nature can flourish.
Decarbonisation brings unprecedented opportunities, massive investments, and new solutions that improve living conditions for humans and nature. Businesses and organisations want to cut their carbon footprint but face complex challenges: from defining carbon reduction roadmaps, to implementing low-carbon strategies.
Our key decarbonisation targets
Ramboll is rising to the challenge of climate change, helping move the world closer to meeting global climate and nature goals: Halving carbon emissions and being nature positive by 2030, and reaching net zero emissions by 2050.
